Daniel Sullivan Named an Elite Boutique Trailblazer by The National Law Journal

10.01.2020

New York—Daniel Sullivan, partner at Holwell Shuster & Goldberg LLP, has been named to The National Law Journal’s 2020 Elite Boutique Trailblazers list. He is one of only 24 lawyers recognized this year, and the fifth HSG lawyer to make the list since 2018.

A former Supreme Court clerk for the late Justice Antonin Scalia, Dan was honored for his role in building HSG’s appellate practice from the ground up. Under his leadership, HSG’s appellate team has participated in landmark SCOTUS cases and secured major appellate wins in a broad range of matters, including in groundbreaking mortgage crisis cases involving billions of dollars of claims relating to the collapse of the housing bubble.

Most recently, Dan obtained a reversal in New York’s First Department in an opinion holding, on a novel legal question, that $140 million in SEC disgorgement is not insurable as a penalty; a reversal of a jury verdict in the First Department in an appeal establishing an important precedent in asbestos cases; and a reversal in the Federal Circuit of a jury trial judgment in a patent-infringement case against an auto-parts manufacturer. Dan also represented a white-collar defendant in a Second-Circuit appeal testing the scope of the wire-fraud and conversion-of-government-property statutes, and represented Linda Macklowe in a high-profile matrimonial dispute involving the valuation of an art collection worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
