Greg Dubinsky

Former SCOTUS Clerk

A former law clerk to Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy of the U.S. Supreme Court and to Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh of the D.C. Circuit, Gregory Dubinsky joined HSG as an associate in June 2017. He also clerked for Judge Gary S. Feinerman of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. At HSG, Greg focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation, along with government and regulatory matters, and is also an appellate specialist. He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in cases involving contract disputes, IP rights, international trade, and defamation.

What’s the most challenging experience you’ve had at HSG?
Although I’ve had a lot of experience in high-stakes matters since my clerkships, including briefing multiple cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, I did not have the opportunity to depose a witness until recently. For my first deposition, which I took within less than a year after joining the firm, HSG trusted me to depose a well-credentialed and experienced damages expert. I had to become intimately familiar with the relevant literature and terminology in advance, to say the least.

What’s the most interesting case you’ve worked on over the course of your career?
I represented the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq—the local government of Iraqi Kurdistan—along with a team at my previous firm. The Kurds parked a huge oil tanker near Galveston, Texas, filled with millions of dollars’ worth of crude, and Iraq’s Ministry of Oil filed suit in an American court, claiming that the Kurds had taken the oil in violation of the Iraqi Constitution and statutes.

Eventually, the Kurds sent the tanker away, and the Fifth Circuit ruled the case was moot. It was a fascinating matter and client, and the case touched on serious foreign affairs questions.

When you’re not practicing law, what’s your favorite pastime?
I’m a recovering politics junkie, and these days I spend more time watching bad TV and enjoying a good book.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m learning my fourth language (Spanish).
