Holwell Shuster & Goldberg Promotes Lani Perlman to Counsel

04.10.2018

New York—Holwell Shuster & Goldberg LLP has promoted Lani Perlman to counsel.

“Lani joined our firm shortly after its founding in 2012, and she has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to our clients and firm ever since,” said Judge Richard Holwell, co-founder of HSG. “She is a very talented lawyer with a very promising career.”

Lani clerked for Judge Brian M. Cogan of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. At HSG, she represents corporate, financial, and individual clients in complex commercial disputes, particularly those involving commercial contracts, complicated financial instruments, and intellectual property. She has become a leader on residential mortgage-backed securities “putback” cases, which are resolving billions of dollars in liability associated with the bursting of the housing bubble. She has also represented the owners of one of New York City’s famed steakhouses in a dispute with its manager, and the bankruptcy estate of what was once one of the country’s largest institutional pharmacies.

Lani’s pro bono work has been particularly impactful. She helped spearhead the creation of HSG’s pro bono program and is a key member of the HSG and ACLU team representing Frontier Airlines pilots and flight attendants in groundbreaking litigation asserting that the airline’s policies regarding pregnancy and breastfeeding violate state and federal law. She has also represented the former president of the board of directors of a New York City nonprofit in connection with a state investigation.

She is an active member of the Federal Bar Council Inn of Court, the Federal Bar Council, and its Second Circuit Courts Committee. She received her undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago, with honors, a master’s degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and her law degree from Fordham University School of Law, where she graduated magna cum laude and Order of the Coif, and served as a notes and articles editor for the Law Review. Lani was recently honored as a “Woman Worth Watching” by Profiles in Diversity Journal and has been recognized as a Rising Star by New York Metro Super Lawyers every year since 2014. Before joining HSG, she was an associate at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP.
