Michael Shuster Named to Lawdragon’s List of 500 Leading Litigators in America

09.14.2023

Holwell Shuster & Goldberg LLP co-founding partner Michael Shuster has been named to Lawdragon’s list of the 500 Leading Litigators in America, which honors the “most elite courtroom advocates in the nation.”

Recognized as a top trial lawyer by Benchmark Litigation and placed on its shortlist for General Commercial Litigator of the Year in 2023, Mike is widely and generously praised by the industry. He has been ranked by Chambers USA as a leading litigator for 18 consecutive years, with sources noting he is the “quintessential lead trial lawyer” who “leads by example and excels not only in case strategy but in oral argument and overall court presence.” He was also named a Litigation Trailblazer by The National Law Journal.

Throughout his career, Mike has been at the forefront of numerous pieces of high-profile litigation. He has represented, for instance, plaintiffs seeking the return by the Hungarian government of artworks that were looted in World War II and valued at more than $100 million; holders of defaulted Argentine debt in the Southern District of New York and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals; and trustees asserting residential mortgage-backed securities “putback” claims in the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy. Mike was a pioneer in RMBS securities litigation following the bursting of the housing bubble in 2007-08, and his groundbreaking advocacy recovered billions of dollars for bank trustee plaintiffs in cases that determined financial responsibility for massive losses stemming from toxic home loans. His team recovered $2.4 billion in the Lehman Brothers trial alone.

Mike’s current portfolio of high-stakes litigation matters includes his representation of Visa in multibillion-dollar antitrust class actions and opt-out litigation relating to network rules at the heart of the Visa system, and the insurer Chubb in national coverage litigation relating to opioids.

In addition to being widely respected throughout the profession for his litigation work, Mike is equally revered within HSG for his mentorship of younger attorneys and his steadfast support of pro bono work within the firm.
